Workshop 1 with Daniel Gerhartz
"Training the Eye to See"

Maximum of 12 artists

The focus of Workshop 1 is on training yourself to see accurate relationships and to record them in the process of portrait painting. Dan will demonstrate painting two portraits in varied lighting situations
. He will lead discussion using slides of masterworks to demonstrate principles of accurate edge control, value control, and color temperature.  Students paint a variety of models in these same lighting situations with a total of 5 different set-ups from Monday to Thursday. During painting time Dan will teach and critique as you are working.   The week will end with some discussion of how he develops a larger composition with a figure in a studio/still life piece and students have the same model and set up for the full day of painting and the opportunity to work through some of those principles.

Workshop 2 with Daniel Gerhartz
"Creating a Studio Painting"

Maximum of 8 artists

The goal of this Workshop 2 is to focus on Dan’s approach to creating a gallery painting. While fundamentals of painting will be an integral part of the teaching, there will be a stronger emphasis on design and working through the problem solving that needs to occur in a larger composition. Artists attending need to have a firm grasp on the fundamentals of painting along with the ability to put in long days at the easel.  Dan will set up and paint a large studio piece over the course of Monday through Thursday working half the day. The other half of the day the students will do the same with his critique. We will also have an evening plein air figurative demonstration with weather dictating this schedule.
On Friday Dan will demonstrate and discuss working up a studio painting from the outdoor field study completed earlier in the week.  The format of this class will be more fluid, paying attention to the needs of the students attending.

Past attendance at a five day oil painting workshop with Daniel is recommended as a foundation for this workshop.

Workshop 1 positions will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

Workshop 2 positions are filled by lottery. Interested artists please submit your name and the workshop(s) you would like to attend.

Deadline for name submission in the lottery is January 26th, 2018.  Notification of acceptance will be completed by January 31st, 2018.
